2. Give your visitors a way to      save or print the material you write. I give you a way to save each post as a PDF.      Save it to your computer for future reference or print it out.

3. Make your text easy on the eyes.      You don’t want it too big or too small. You don’t want it too light or      too dark. Too big and your text can come across as yelling, much the same      as using all caps. Too small, and your text becomes difficult to read. Use      a 12 pt font for consistent results. Try to use a black or dark blue font      on a white background for easy reading. Too light, and visitors will be      straining their eyes to see it.

4.Provide an online directory of      resources and links for your visitors. My resource and links page is a growing list of people and sites that I have done      business with or who provide information I find useful and hope my readers      will as well,

5.Be professional and double      check your content for spelling and grammar errors. Mistakes in spelling      and grammar are huge turn offs to your visitors. Please, please, edit and      proofread carefully! Even after you publish your post, go back in a day or      two and read it again. Often a mistake that was hiding from you will      blatantly pop out a couple of days later when your eyes are seeing it      fresh!

Very few pieces of advice have unanimous support.

But there is one piece of advice that is given often, and it is one of the rare types of advice that everyone agrees upon.

That advice is:

Only blog on your own self-hosted website.

The reason why this advice is always agreed upon is because it is absolutely true. Blogging on a free site such as Blogger, Blogspot, or a free Wordpress blog is a great way for a beginner blogger to test the waters, see what the blogosphere has to offer, and get their feet wet.

But once the first month of blogging is over, and you have decided that this is for you, there are many, many reasons for you to take the plunge and get your own self-hosted website to blog on.

Are you spending 5-10 hours blogging each week on a site that you don’t even own?  If so, please read some of the very important reasons that I list here for why you shouldn’t waste your time blogging on a free account any longer.

1. Respect- I apologize if I offend anyone, but to be quite blunt, most people who are familiar with blogging do not respect a blogger who uses a free account on a major blogging site. Also, have you ever thought of the possiblity of selling your blog in the future? Many people do it, and many blogs fetch thousands of dollars or more. But these are only self-hosted blogs. Having a blog hosted on a free account drops the value of that blog immensely.

4. Domain Name- Do you know that your domain name may be worth a lot of money one day? If you own it, that is. Getting a free blog account makes your blog hosted as a sub-domain of the blogging site, meaning that you don’t own it, they do. For example, instead of www.you.com , your blog will be www.you.blogspot.com . Get the picture? It’s theirs, not yours.

5. Your Brand- One of the main points of blogging is to create a brand for yourself and your blog. The only way to create a powerful brand is to own all of the naming rights, and to keep your image the way you want it to be. Blogging on a free account seriously dilutes the power of your personal brand.

Overall, here is the point of this article: If you do not blog on your own self-hosted website, the blog is not actually yours. It is the property of the free blog site.

Let’s look at the top seven mistakes new bloggers (and some experienced ones) make when setting up a new blog. I know all about these mistakes, because I’ve made them too.

Mistake One:  Not Hosting Your Own Blog

Own your information!  Don’t let WordPress or Blogger host your blog.  You will get no benefit from it and you will not look professional.

 Mistake Two: No Clearly Defined Purpose For The Blog

This is the primary mistake that many new bloggers make. They start blogging without thinking about why they’re creating a blog. Define your purpose before you set up your new blog.

 Mistake Three:  A Title With No Thought

Make your title reflect the purpose of your blog and use keywords when possible.  The title is important for your readers but also for search engines.

Mistake Four: No Keywords Selected For The Blog

Do keyword research on your niche.  Know your keywords and use your keywords.  Don’t forget to add them to the meta tag for keywords too.  Keep a list of your keywords close and refer to them as you are writing your posts and titles for your posts.

 Mistake Five:  No Description For The Blog

You need a little ‘elevator’ speech for your blog.  Tell what it is about using as many keywords as possible.  Add this to you meta description tag.  This is what will show up in the search engines after you are indexed for your keywords just after the title of the search result.

 Mistake Six: No Marketing Plan To Get Traffic

While a blog has natural traffic generators like RSS built-in, pinging capabilities and the ability for other people to comment, you’ll still need to market the blog. Decide on two or three ways you’ll market this particular blog, and then do it. You’ll get the traffic you want.

 Mistake Seven: Focus On Traffic, Not On Content

It’s a natural mistake to want all the traffic you can get. But what if there’s nothing on the blog to snag interest once the traffic gets there? Focus on content, then on traffic, and when you have content, focus on both - you can never have enough traffic, but it’s your content that draws your visitors and makes money for you.

At the simplest levels, blogs are just another sort of webpage.  Many bloggers forget this.  Blogs are just another web page that your reader is drawn to, and based on what they see and read they may or may not stay.  Your job as a blogger is to engage their interest from the second your URL shows in their browser bar.  And that job does not start with your most recent post, it starts with something that happened before you had even made a post, and that is the nature of the blog template that you are using.

In order to blog for profit, or to make money in other words, you need to understand the principles of Google Adsense, a selling advertising space on your blog and affiliate marketing.  You could also advertise your products on your blog if you have any to sell, but you will likely be doing the selling from your website and that is another technique altogether.

Before discussing ways in which you can use your blog to make money, let’s first discuss your blog, and where you are operating it from.  If your blog is a Blogger or Wordpress blog hosted by either of these two, then your options are very limited when compared to uploading your own blogging software from wordpress.org.  If you are serious about blogging for money then you should do so from your own website.

If you have no web host as yet, and are seeking one from which to operate your blog, then make sure that your host offers MySQL.  You will need that to run Wordpress from your website.  The reason that Wordpress is recommended is that it is the best blogging software online if you have your own website.  If you do not, then many people prefer Blogger, although others still use Wordpress from the Wordpress.com site.

I will not go further into this because it is not the object of this article, which is to recommend ways of making money from a blog. First register with Google Adsense.  Enter that into your browser and follow all of the instructions.  You will be able to offer adverts on your blog, and will be paid every time somebody clicks on an advert.  They don’t have to buy anything, just click on the advert.

You should place your Adsense blocks somewhere on your sidebar, and also at the bottom of your blog so that when people have finished reading they have something to click on. If your reader reaches the end of your article, page of blog, it means that are interested in what are writing, otherwise they would have left and clicked on to somewhere else.

If you have nothing at the end of the post or the page, then people will feel somewhat let down. If you provide them with something to do, even just to click on an advert that interests them, then that is what they are liable to do. You can also offer affiliate links on your blog:  links to products being sold by others whereby you get a proportion of the sales price for each sales (frequently 50%).  You can find lots of affiliate products to sell on Clickbank.com. or simply by entering the term into your favourite search engine.  These links can take the form of banner ads, text links or clickable logo, and you can place them anywhere on your blog.

This applies predominantly for blogs run from your own website, where you have total editing over the html of the various components of your blog:  the stylesheet that controls each complete page, the headers, footers, sidebars and everything else that makes up your blog.  You do not have this degree of control over a hosted blog. If you want to use your blog to make real money, then it is necessary to have your blog on your own website rather than on a blog host such as Bloggit or Wordpress.com.

There are other ways in which to use your blog to make money, and blogging for profit and traffic is a combination of many sources of income and traffic generation techniques. Once you understand how to use these, you will find your blog a lot more useful than just a simple website.
